Description
Robotics & Coding with micro:bit
In this hands-on course, students will explore the fundamentals of programming and robotics using the BBC micro:bit and a programmable robot platform.
Students begin by developing their coding skills using the micro:bit, learning how to write programs that use inputs, outputs, and sensors to create interactive and responsive systems. Along the way, they will build confidence in structuring code, testing ideas, and solving problems.
Coding with micro:bit
Students will learn to:
- Write programs using inputs, outputs, and variables
- Use buttons, LED displays, and built-in sensors
- Create interactive and responsive systems
- Test, debug, and improve their code
They will then apply these skills to build a remote-controlled robot car, using wireless communication to control movement with precision and responsiveness. This introduces key concepts such as real-time control and communication between devices.
Robotics & Control
Students will:
- Build and program a remote-controlled robot car
- Use wireless communication to control movement
- Program a light-seeking robot using sensor data
- Design an obstacle-avoiding robot that navigates independently
From there, students will move into more advanced and exciting challenges. They will program a light-seeking robot, using sensor data to guide movement and make real-time decisions—an important concept in autonomous systems and intelligent behaviour.
The course also introduces obstacle avoidance, where students design robots that can detect objects and navigate around them independently. This brings together logic, control, and problem-solving in a practical, real-world robotics context.
Summary of Learning
By the end of the course, students will:
- Understand the fundamentals of coding and robotics
- Build and control their own working robot
- Apply logical thinking to solve real-world challenges
- Gain confidence in programming and problem-solving
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to experiment, refine their code, and take on challenges that extend their understanding, building both technical skills and creative confidence.
