What we should expect as Developers
On October 16, Apple unleashed some new news on the world including a new OS, new hardware and much more. In order to keep our readers up to date on all things Apple, we have decided to summarise the events that occurred on the 16th.
New Products Announced!
Apple fans are always on the lookout for the latest in Apple hardware. Who wouldn’t? The products they release are usually borderline revolutionary and for developers this means new on-screen real-estate, more inter-product connectivity and updated developer tools (which was provided in the last Apple event)
So what can we expect in terms of new products?
- iPad Air
- iPad Mini
- iMac
- Mac Mini
When it comes to the new generation tablets they brought out we can see that it is, Thinner, Faster, More resolution, Quicker Response Time, Better App Real Estate and a wider price range starting as low as $249, meaning that more people who before ‘couldn’t afford’ an Apple device might now jump on the band wagon.
No more 32 GB option
Apple is starting to skip the 32 GB option and we can assume that in the near future that will disappear completely. Why? Apple has always offered to ‘double your memory’ for roughly $100 USD. Now with technology catching up, the cost of going all the way to 64 GB is roughly the same as the 32GB option which means that the “costs” remain the same however the incentive for the consumer to purchase the upgrade is much bigger.
This is good news for both Apple and the Consumer.
Welcome to Yosemite
With the OS running on open beta for a while now, it’s officially been released onto the world. While the appearance seems eerily similar, there are a lot of differences to be noted.
For starters, the OS is heavier, will require more RAM and can only be downloaded to Macs that run either Maverick or at the latest Snow leopard.
The ‘Continuous Client’ is another amazing innovation, which developers should definitely look into. Pretty much what this means is that if you work on your iPad on a spreadsheet and then walk over to your Mac, your work will be available to work on the other device. This works for all Apple apps and with the Developer Tool Kit released, now third party app developers can get in on the action as well!
You’ll even be able to receive calls on any of your Apple devices if your iPhone is nearby. This is aimed at making communication easier if your iPhone is not “call ready” at the moment, such as being charged or “out of sight”.
Safari also got a Makeover and now is more a Chrome ‘look-alike’ with obvious Mac features. However, thank God for the update because Chrome is still considered by most the best Stand Alone Web Browser. Apple aims on changing this reality.
iMac goes 5k
The new iMac is pushing the boundaries with a 27-inch screen and 5120 x 2880 resolution. Starting price of this beast is $2499 and for anyone who needs some serious power, this is it!
Conclusion
Apple always surprises us with their latest gadgets and trinkets and this round, we’re all quite happy. There are still some bugs, but then again, when isn’t there? The most exciting news however to us is the “Continuous Client” feature that will change the way developers ‘think’ about app development.
